Energetic Connections

Welcome!

We naturally form energetic connections with the people, places, and habits in our lives. Often, these connections are beautiful and supportive. However, when a relationship ends, a dynamic becomes toxic, or a past situation keeps pulling you backward, these connections can manifest as energetic cords that drain your vitality.

If you feel stuck, emotionally exhausted, or unable to stop thinking about someone from your past, it is time to reclaim your power. Cord cutting is not an act of animosity; it is a profound act of self-love. It is the conscious decision to untangle your energy from theirs so both parties can move forward cleanly and freely.

This guide will walk you through what cord cutting is, how to know when you need it, and several step-by-step rituals you can perform at home to reclaim your energy.

Signs You Are Ready

Cord cutting is a beautiful spiritual tool, but it requires alignment between your conscious desire to let go and your subconscious readiness to actually change. If you force a ritual before you are truly ready, you may find yourself re-tying the cord just days later. Before picking a Cord Cutting Ritual, take an honest inventory of your emotional state.

✅ You accept reality: You have stopped waiting for an apology, a change of heart, or a different ending. You accept things exactly as they are.

✅ You are tired of the loop: The comfort of holding onto the connection has finally been outweighed by the exhaustion of feeling drained.

✅ You are willing to let go of the narrative: You are ready to stop talking about this person or situation to your friends and family. You are ready to stop watching tarot readings to see if they will return, what they will do next, and what is happening in their life. You are ready for them to stop being a main character in your daily life.

✅ You desire peace over being right: You are willing to drop the energetic argument and reclaim your peace of mind, even if you never got "justice."

Signs You Are NOT Ready

Cord cutting is a beautiful spiritual tool, but it requires alignment between your conscious desire to let go and your subconscious readiness to actually change. If you force a ritual before you are truly ready, you may find yourself re-tying the cord just days later. Before picking a Cord Cutting Ritual, take an honest inventory of your emotional state.

⛔ You are seeking a reaction: If you are secretly hoping this ritual will make the other person miss you, feel your absence, or text you, you are not ready. This is an act of reclamation, not manipulation.

You are still deep in acute anger: If you are feeling consumed by rage, your energy is still highly active and attached. Doing a ritual now might just amplify that chaotic energy.

You are still trauma bonded: Sometimes, keeping an energetic connection alive (even a painful one) feels safer than the empty space of the unknown.

🌿 A gentle reminder: It is completely okay if you aren’t ready. Healing is not linear, and honoring your timeline is its own form of powerful magic.

Which Ritual Is Right?

Trust your intuition when choosing a method. Because everyone’s spiritual practice, lifestyle, and emotional needs are different, there is no single "right" way to cut a cord.

🕯️ The Candle Method: Visual & Revelatory

Watching the flames interact gives you spiritual insight into how the energy is shifting. Materials: Candles, natural twine, fire-safe tray, and lighter.

✂️ The String Method: Somatic & Immediate

The snip of the scissors sends an instant, undeniable signal to your subconscious mind. Materials: String or yarn, scissors, and a photo or paper.

🌊 The Water Method: Nurturing & Purifying

Washing away the energetic residue soothes a tired soul. Materials: Epsom or sea salt, water (bath or shower), and essential oils.

Cleansing Your Space

Before cutting cords, it is essential to clear your physical environment of any stagnant or heavy energy. Think of this as creating a blank energetic canvas for your work. You can use any of these quick methods to prepare your space:

💨 Smoke Cleansing: Light incense, a rosemary bundle, or palo santo. Waft the smoke gently around your body and into the corners of your room to neutralize lingering negativity.

🔊 Sound Cleansing: Energy responds beautifully to sound. Ring a clear bell, use a singing bowl, or simply clap your hands loudly around the room to break up dense, stuck energy.

🪟 Air Cleansing: Open a window to let fresh air circulate. Visualize a bright, sweeping white light filling the room, actively pushing old, heavy energy out the window.

Once the air in your room feels light, crisp, and peaceful, you are ready to begin your ritual.

The Candle Method

Classic and highly visual ritual that uses candles and a string to represent the cord connecting you.

📋 TOOLS YOU WILL NEED

  • Two taper candles: Ideally, one white candle (to represent you) and one black or colored candle (to represent the other person). If you're unable to acquire different color taper candles, two original neutral colored taper candles will work also. You will also need two taper candle holders for them.

  • Piece of natural string or twine: Cotton or jute string works best as it burns safely.

  • Fire-safe plate or tray: Foil-lined trays work great for easy cleanup (or do this over an empty sink).

  • A carving tool: A toothpick or pin to carve names into the candles.

  • A lighter or matches: To light the candles.

  • Optional: Cleansing herbs or incense (like sage, rosemary, or palo santo) and protective crystals (like black tourmaline or smoky quartz).

📋 STEP-BY-STEP RITUAL

Step 1: Prepare and Cleanse Your Space

Before beginning, ensure you will not be disturbed. Cleanse your space and your tools by selecting a Cleansing Method (Smoke, Sound, or Window). Set an intention for safety, clarity, and emotional release.

Step 2: Prepare Your Candles

Take your carving tool. On the first candle (yours), gently carve your name or initials. On the second candle, carve the name of the person, habit, or situation you wish to release. Secure both candles in their taper candle holders and set them upright on your fire-safe plate, leaving about 3 to 5 inches of space between them.

Step 3: Tie the Energetic Cord

Take your piece of string. Tie one end securely around your candle, and the other end around the opposing candle. The string should be taut but not pulling the candles over. This string represents the energetic cord that currently binds you.

Step 4: Set Your Intention and Light the Candles

Sit quietly for a moment. Close your eyes and visualize the energy that flows between you and this person. Acknowledge the lessons this connection taught you, but firmly decide that it no longer serves your highest good. When you are ready, light both candles. As you do, state your intention aloud or in your mind. Example Affirmation: "I release the ties that bind me to [Name/Situation]. I call all of my energy back to me, pure and whole. I return your energy back to you with peace. We are both free."

Step 5: Observe and Meditate

Safely watch the candles burn. Notice how the flame interacts with the string. Does your candle burn faster and brighter? Does the string catch quickly, or does it smolder? As the flame reaches the string and snaps it, visualize the energetic bond breaking in real-time. Feel a weight lifting from your chest or shoulders. Allow the candles to burn all the way down safely.

Step 6: Final Disposal

Once the candles have completely burned out and the wax is cool, gather the remains. Because this ritual is about permanent removal, it is best to wrap the leftovers in a tissue or cloth and dispose of them immediately outside of your home (in an outdoor trash bin) or bury them away from your property.

❤️‍🩹 THE IMPORTANCE OF AFTERCARE

Cord cutting can leave you feeling incredibly lighter, but it can also leave an emotional "void" where that energy used to sit. In the days following your ritual take salt baths or salt showers to further cleanse your aura, make time to rest as your spiritual body needs time to recalibrate, and intentionally fill the empty energetic space with things you love - hobbies, self-care, and positive affirmations. Remember: If a cord feels deep-rooted, you may need to repeat this ritual as you peel back different layers of emotional attachment. Trust the process and trust your inner strength.

The String Method

The string method is a fantastic alternative to the two-candle ritual. It is highly physical, requires zero fire, and focuses on the tangible, somatic action of physically cutting a bond. It’s perfect for people who live in dorms or apartments with strict fire rules, or who simply prefer a non-fire practice.

 📋 TOOLS YOU WILL NEED

  • A ball of natural string, yarn, or twine: Red yarn is traditionally used to represent active emotional or passionate ties, while black or brown twine represents heavy, stuck attachments. White or neutral string works perfectly for any situation.

  • Cutting Instrument: A sharp pair of scissors.

  • An object to represent the other party: This can be a photograph, a piece of paper with their name written on it, or a small object that reminds you of them.

  • A small cloth bag or envelope: For final disposal.

Step 2: Visualization Practice

Sit comfortably with your tools in front of you. Take three deep, slow breaths. Visualize roots growing from the base of your spine deep into the earth, grounding your energy so you feel stable and secure.

Step 3: Bind the Connection

Take the item representing the other person (or the paper with their name) and hold it in your hand. Take one end of the string and tie it securely around that object. Next, take the other end of the string and tie it loosely around your own wrist or finger. You are now physically witnessing the tether between you.

Step 3: Feel the Attachment

Close your eyes for a moment. Feel the slight pull of the string on your wrist. Acknowledge that this string represents the thoughts, text messages, old memories, or resentments that keep you hooked into this dynamic.

Step 4: The Intentional Cut

Open your eyes and pick up your scissors. Take a deep, clearing breath in. Hold the scissors right in the middle of the string, halfway between you and the object. As you exhale loudly through your mouth, snip the string completely in half.

Step 5: Untie and Release

Immediately untie the remaining string from your own wrist. Drop it onto the table. Say aloud: "I am no longer bound. My energy is mine alone." Take the object and its attached piece of string and place them immediately into the cloth bag or envelope so you no longer have to look at them.

Step 6: Final Disposal

Take the envelope containing the other person's side of the string and the object, and throw it away in an outdoor trash bin. Take your side of the cut string and bury it in the earth to be neutralized, or throw it away separately from the other piece.

The Water Method

While the candle and string methods are focused on severing ties, the Water Method is focused on dissolving and washing away the energetic residue. Water is the element of emotions, making this ritual incredibly healing if you are dealing with a broken heart, deep grief, or a situation that leaves you feeling emotionally contaminated. You can perform this in a full bath, or modify it as a shower ritual if you don't have a tub.

 📋 TOOLS YOU WILL NEED

  • An appropriate space to conduct this ritual: Private bath or shower with running water or access to water.

  • 1 to 2 cups of Epsom Salt or Sea Salt: Salt is a natural energetic neutralizer that draws out toxins from both the physical and etheric bodies.

  • Fresh or dried herbs/flowers: Rosemary (for clearing the past), Lavender (for emotional healing), or Rose petals (for self-love).

  • Optional: A few drops of essential oil (like frankincense, eucalyptus, or lavender) and a glass of clean drinking water.

Step 2: Prepare Your Sacred Waters

Begin by running a warm bath. As the tub fills, pour in your salt and scatter your herbs. Stir the water clockwise with your dominant hand, visualizing the water charging with bright, purifying white light.

Step 3: Soak And Surrender

Step into the bath and sit or lay in a safe position. Close your eyes. Let the warm, salted water hold your weight. Allow yourself to feel whatever emotions come up - crying, grieving, or venting is a natural part of this water release.

Step 3: Energetic Cleansing

Take a washcloth or use your bare hands to gently cup the water and pour it over your shoulders, chest, and arms. As you wash yourself, imagine the water gently dissolving the sticky, heavy energetic cords attached to your body, detaching them seamlessly without pain.

Step 4: State Your Release

Take a deep breath and state your intention clearly to the water: "I wash away what is not mine. I dissolve all cords that drain my spirit. I am cleansed, I am whole, I am free."

Step 5: Watch it Drain Away

Pull the drain plug while you are still sitting in the tub. This is the most crucial part of the ritual. As the water spins down the drain, visually track it. Watch it carry away the salt, the residue, and the energetic weight, leaving you clean and unburdened in the dry tub. Step out of the tub and gently towel dry. Drink a full glass of clean water to rehydrate your physical body. Put on fresh, clean, comfortable clothing and allow yourself to rest for the evening.

🚿 SHOWER MODIFICATION

If you only have a shower, mix your salt and herbs in a large bowl of warm water. Take a regular shower and at the very end of your shower, stand under the stream of water and slowly pour your prepared bowl of salt and herbs over your shoulders, visualizing the cords washing down the drain.

- The Bottom Line -

Ultimately, spiritual cord cutting is a profound act of self-love and energetic boundary-setting. By intentionally releasing the heavy ties of the past, you create space to move forward with clarity and peace. Trust the process, and remember that your energy always belongs to you. If you're not ready to do a Spiritual Cord Cutting, that's okay. Don't force yourself. You'll know when you're ready. Whether you perform one or not, be gentle with yourself. 🦋
